In 1982, Pope John Paul II held an open air mass at York racecourse in front of 200,000 pilgrims. Infamous highwayman Dick Turpin was hanged here in 1739. The highest racecourse attendance here was estimated at 150,000 in 1851. The Princess Royal rode a winner at York racecourse in 1988 — winning the aptly-named Queen Mother’s Cup. The Ebor Stand was used in A Touch of Frost TV show to represent Denton Airport.
