Calls to cap ‘immoral’ pay of academy heads
THE huge pay of some academy school heads was yesterday branded “immoral”, with some raking in more than the PM.
Former Labour schools minister Lord Adonis called for a salary cap.
He said: “It is a simple question of morality and use of public funding. The education department should quickly intervene.”
Lord Adonis is calling for heads to be paid no more than the £150,000 Theresa May earns. Figures show 111 academy bosses are on higher salaries than the PM, including seven paid more than £200,000 a year.
Sir Daniel Moynihan is the highest paid boss, raking in £420,000 to run the Harris Federation chain of 44 academies, according to the Department for Education figures.
A spokesman said: “Academy trusts set executive pay level.
“We expect them to use that freedom in a responsible manner and have updated our guidance for trusts to make that clear.”
