‘Rubbish’ jet fuel cleared for take off

- BY MARK ELLIS Transport Correspondent

PLANES could one day be powered by household rubbish from landfill sites.

The Government is making £22million available to develop low-carbon waste-based fuels for aircraft and lorries by 2021.

Experts say it is impossible to run them on electric motors but sustainable fuel could emit 90% less carbon than fossil fuels.

The Department of Transport has had interest from more than 70 groups.

It is hoped the industry may be worth £600million a year to Britain by 2030 and support 9,800 jobs.

Trials of a new jet fuel have taken place in Europe and North America.

Transport minister Jesse Norman said: “We are committed to cutting carbon emissions and promoting new fuels.”
