Labour shifts with call for 4 more years in single market

- BY JASON BEATTIE Head of Politics

LABOUR has set out plans to keep the UK in the single market and customs union for two to four more years.

Keir Starmer said Government rejection of staying in both was a “colossal risk” for jobs and businesses.

Shadow Brexit Secretary Sir Keir, in a major policy shift, said the transition after the formal March 2019 cut-off date “must be a bridge to a strong and lasting new relation- ship with the EU”. Labour’s new stance was hailed by the unions and pro-EU groups. TUC leader Frances O’Grady called it “sensible and reasonable”. It came as Brexit Secretary David Davis resumes talks today with EU negotiator Michel Barnier, on issues including Northern Ireland and citizens’ rights. A million EU nationals working here, including 50% of those with PhDs, are thinking of leaving, a survey for KPMG found.
