In 1980 I was sent to photograph a young nursery school assistant called Lady Diana Spencer who was dating the Prince of Wales. I had no idea then that I would spend the next 17 years of my life with Diana, capturing her incredible story through my camera lens.
My photographs charted her engagement, wedding and the birth of her beloved sons.
But I also saw Diana battling her demons – bulimia, depression and despair over her marriage.
My pictures scooped awards – but she was more than an assignment. Diana had become my friend. I’d won her trust and, while I was always “Mr Gavin”, in private she called me Gavers, like everyone else. These are some of my favourite pictures of her...
