Our front page paid tribute to Lord Louis Mountbatten, murdered by the IRA near his holiday home in Co Sligo, Ireland. Mountbatten, who was the last Viceroy of India, died when a bomb exploded on his boat Shadow V. His grandson and two other people were also killed.
54 YEARS AGO (1963)
Martin Luther King made his “I have a dream speech” in Washington DC. The civil rights leader addressed 250,000 African-Americans and white campaigners who had marched on the capital to demand an end to racial segregation.
23 YEARS AGO (1994)
Branches of Marks & Spencer, Waitrose and House of Fraser opened for the first time on a Sunday, following the relaxation of the Sunday trading laws. According to the new regulations, larger stores were restricted to six hours of trading between 10am and 6pm, while small shops could open all day.
