38 YEARS AGO (1979)

Our front page paid tribute to Lord Louis Mountbatte­n, murdered by the IRA near his holiday home in Co Sligo, Ireland. Mountbatte­n, who was the last Viceroy of India, died when a bomb exploded on his boat Shadow V. His grandson and two other people were also killed.

54 YEARS AGO (1963)

Martin Luther King made his “I have a dream speech” in Washington DC. The civil rights leader addressed 250,000 African-Americans and white campaigner­s who had marched on the capital to demand an end to racial segregatio­n.

23 YEARS AGO (1994)

Branches of Marks & Spencer, Waitrose and House of Fraser opened for the first time on a Sunday, following the relaxation of the Sunday trading laws. According to the new regulation­s, larger stores were restricted to six hours of trading between 10am and 6pm, while small shops could open all day.
