EU: GET SERIOUS
Brussels chief warns Davis that dithering is delaying trade deal
THE EU told Britain to “start negotiating seriously” as the third round of Brexit talks began yesterday.
Its chief negotiator Michel Barnier said despite position papers from Brexit Secretary David Davis, the UK’s stance on vital issues was still unclear. He stressed discussions could not start on a transition period and a trade deal until agreement on the “divorce” bill and rights of EU citizens. Mr Barnier said: “I’m concerned. Time passes quickly. We need UK positions on all separation issues. We must start negotiating seriously.”
Mr Davis urged “flexibility and imagination” on both sides. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Britain’s “obligations” must remain “on the books”.
The UK is reportedly trying to limit the exit bill, covering pension and budget fees, to £36billion.
Manufacturers will today warn of a crisis unless the post-Brexit status of EU migrants is clarified.
