Cost of dying hits £3,784

THE average cost of a funeral has gone up by 3% in a year to £3,784.

And funeral debt soared to a record £160million as a quarter of families took out loans or borrowed from friends to give relatives a decent send-off.

There was a five-fold rise in funerals crowdfunded by well-wishers – up from 500 in 2015 to 2,500.

Royal London, which compiled the data, said: “It is clear that Government action to tackle funeral poverty is long overdue.”
