TOP OF THE LAKE: CHINA GIRL

-

BBC2, 9pm It has not always made for easy viewing, this second series of Jane Campion’s detective drama. And not just because of the dark subject matter or upsetting scenes, but because so many of the characters are thoroughly unlikeable and behave bizarrely.

So it’s partly down to the talent of Elisabeth Moss, Gwendoline Christie and Nicole Kidman that we’re still here. And there’s a lot that still needs to be resolved – Robin’s daughter has been kidnapped, a fact she learns in the midst of drunken sex with Mary’s adoptive dad.

Although it turns out that even a drunk or hungover Robin Griffin is still a better detective than the rest of the Sydney police force, as she figures out what happened during the shooting and tracks down the gunman, leading to a dangerous confrontation.

However, there’s also Mary’s psycho philosopher pimp fiancé still to track down, not to mention a house full of illegal surrogates.
