Diana still lives on in our hearts

-

It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years since the untimely death of Diana, Princess of Wales. She was someone who, despite her wealth, position and celebrity, most people could resonate with, whether it was through the challenges she faced in her personal life or her treatment at the hands of the Royal Family and the Establishment.

Through all the drama, Diana threw herself into charitable work and was not judgmental or snobbish towards others. She made a real difference to the lives of many and gave the nation two fine sons to carry the Royal Family forward into the next generation with all the values she embedded in them.

For all this and for all the glamour, style and compassion she brought to the Royal Family, she will always be remembered.

I watched Diana: The Day Britain Cried on Tuesday evening and my emotions welled up just as they did 20 years ago. I also remember the reluctance of the Royal Family to share the public’s grief and that Tony Blair was forced to warn them that opinion was turning against them. How many people watched it and remembered the battle of wills – which laid a backdrop to the funeral – and which this sad event didn’t deserve?

How much longer do we have to keep raking over the death of Princess Diana? It’s 20 years since she died, so isn’t it time the poor woman was allowed to rest in peace?

Her sons must be sick and tired of it – we should allow them to grieve and remember their mother in private.

When Prince Charles hurt Diana, he also hurt his two sons and he will have to live with that fact for the rest of his life.

The Royal Family thought Diana would fade into the background once she had provided them with an heir and a spare, but she became the most popular member of the House of Windsor.

Diana’s lasting legacy is that she brought about great change in the Royal Family, making them realise they had to be less aloof and more approachable if they wished to be relevant in the 21st century.

I was a massive fan of Princess Diana and miss her immensely, but there have been too many programmes in the lead-up to the 20th anniversary of her death.

After the Diana tapes on Channel 4, BBC1 focused on the week after her death by airing Diana, 7 Days. ITV, not to be outdone, showed Diana: The Day Britain Cried.

Over the past months we’ve had so many variations on her life and death it’s been a little ghoulish, if not intrusive. That’s it now – it is time

to let Diana rest in peace.

Diana will never be forgotten and lives on through her precious boys. She was a unique and special person who cared and reached out to the vulnerable. She made a huge impact in whatever she did. Her actions spoke volumes. How I wish she was still living life to the full.

We should let Diana rest in peace. She broke her marriage vows, the same as Prince Charles did, yet he is vilified while she is feted. I have no love for Charles, but this is the truth of it.
