BBC1, 8.30pm Four must become two tonight as John and Gregg choose who goes through to the semi-finals out of Ulrika Jonsson, Nick Moran, Lesley Garrett and Barney Harwood.

First up is the knowledge and skills test, when they see if the contestants can pick a parsnip and a poussin out of a line-up. Why that’s important, don’t ask us.

Then they’re split into teams for the mass catering challenge, which is at the Oval cricket ground – cue Gregg’s chance to shout lots of puns about cricket and tell the pairs to hit the diners for six.

Then it’s back to the MasterChef kitchens where the celebs must serve up their best two courses for the judges and some former finalists.

Anyone else think 90 minutes is a bit long? If you cut out all of Gregg’s gurning and facial overreactions, you could easily lose 15 minutes.

Get rid of Lesley’s warbling and there’s another five.
