Don’t let Korean crisis start a war

- FIONA PARKER Alison Fisher, Sheffield

The Japanese government is to be applauded for not reacting to the extreme provocation by North Korea. Had they shot down the missile fired over their territory by Kim Jong-un then who knows what would have happened.

However, what worries me, and I suspect millions of others, is that President Donald Trump may not show the same restraint.

The only way to handle North Korea is for the UN to act as one voice. Any retaliatory military action would have potentially devastating consequences for the whole world.

Let us hope and pray the UN can find a peaceful way to de-escalate this crisis.

Andy Mitchell New Malden, South West London

If America is being threatened, which it is, it has every right to put on a show of strength to put the fear of death into the aggressor. If the likes of China and Russia had any sense they would be telling the North Koreans to toe the line, instead of their muted response. I am sure Kim Jong-un would soon calm down and stop his anti-US rhetoric. I suspect China could send in troops and take over North Korea if it wished. I am sure the US would be happy to sit back and watch it happen.

Crazy as Kim Jong-un appears, Trump is no better. Indeed, he is more dangerous, considering the nuclear weapons at his disposal. In fact, the US has more weapons than any other country in the world.

Britain must not get involved in action against North Korea.

Tension can build up so quickly and the situation in the Korean peninsula needs a careful approach.

K D Thornhill, South East London

Attacking North Korea is a last resort. Theresa May has clearly stated that she wants to put pressure on North Korea’s regime because of its constant threats, not to mention firing a missile over Japan.

Kim Jong-un is a psychotic, tyrannical warmonger who needs to be removed as soon as possible.

He has also been starving and torturing his own people. Mrs May might not be perfect but at least we have freedom of speech, the freedom to start our own businesses and, of course, the right to vote.

Nick Salerno Livingston, West Lothian

The stand-off between Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump is becoming more terrifying by the day and the British people must have a say in whether we join in any military action against North Korea.

Theresa May must not be allowed to plunge us into this mess.

Sheila Holmes, Wallasey, Wirral

Is the Donald Trump who said he “deplores” North Korea’s missile launch over Japan because it shows “contempt” for “minimum standards of acceptable international behaviour” the same Donald Trump who said he was “very proud” of dropping the “mother of all bombs” on Afghanistan?

Sasha Simic, North London

We do not need to be involved in any potential attack on North Korea – either militarily or by using cyber warfare. We want peace in this country.
