WAYNE Rooney was caught drink-driving at 2am after offering to help a woman get home.
The striker, 31, met her partying while wife Coleen was on holiday.
WAYNE Rooney had some serious explaining to do yesterday after he was caught drink-driving in a young woman’s car at 2am.
The former England skipper, 31, had partied in restaurants and bars while pregnant wife Coleen was in Mallorca.
He was held for almost 12 hours following his arrest near his £6million home, before being charged and bailed.
It is believed the Everton striker had offered to help the 29-year-old brunette, an office worker from Salford, get home.
He had just left the Symposium bar in Wilmslow, Cheshire, when police pulled him over at the wheel of her VW Beetle. A source said: “He was offering to do a favour and give her a lift, but that has obviously backfired.
“Wayne met her on a night out while he was with his friends. It was getting late and he offered to drive.”
Coleen, 31, is understood to have known nothing of his arrest until the story appeared on the Mirror’s website seven hours later.
She was believed to be preparing to fly back from Mallorca with sons Kai, seven, Klay, four, and Kit, one. Coleen was pictured showing off her baby bump earlier this week.
The source added: “The arrest was a shock for all concerned. Coleen knew nothing about it, as she was away at the time. His agent, Paul Stretford, had to get to the station as soon as he found out. But Coleen will want to know exactly what was going on now. Hasn’t Wayne heard of Uber?” Wayne had been out with former Manchester United team-mate Wes Brown and the brother of Burnley defender Phil Bardsley. He posed for selfies with fans at Italian restaurant Piccolino at 4pm before going to the Bubble Room bar. The star was seen singing and dancing to local band Funky Treacle, who were playing Oasis covers.
County cricketer Jack McIver posted a snap of himself with Rooney at Bubble Room at 10pm. McIver’s team-mate Gary Davies joked: “He will get some stick tomorrow when he plays.”
One reveller said: “They were singing songs and watching the band. They all sang Wonderwall. I left at 10.30pm and Wayne was just drinking beer.”
The pals then went to Symposium. Manager George Yiannis said: “He was in here and I think he had a good time.
“I didn’t serve him a drink. I’m not sure if anyone else did. Whether he’d been drinking somewhere else is a different
thing.” Rooney was pulled over after leaving with the woman in her car.
He was released from Middlewich Custody Suite yesterday afternoon and looked miserable in the back of Mr Stretford’s Range Rover as he went home. Cheshire Police said: “The man was arrested shortly after 2.00am. Wayne Rooney has since been charged with driving whilst over the limit.”
Rooney will face Stockport magistrates on September 18. You can be fined, banned and jailed for drinkdriving. Guidelines state the maximum sentence is six months’ jail, a fine of up to £5,000 and a ban of 12 to 36 months. The penalty is up to the magistrates.
It is not the first time the player, who quit international duty last month, has had a brush with booze. He could reportedly “hardly speak” after crashing a wedding in Watford last November.
Rooney has also been accused of a string of infidelities. He was 18 when he reportedly had £45 sex sessions with a 48-year-old grandmother. He said later: “I did on occasions visit massage parlours. It was at a time when I was immature and before I had settled down with Coleen. I regret it deeply.”
But he also faced claims he slept with £1,000-a-night escorts Jenny Thompson and Helen Wood in 2009 while Coleen was pregnant.
Rooney’s spokesman and Everton declined to comment. A spokesman for Wes Brown could not be reached.
