Summer was proper hot... and very wet

- BY SALLY WARDLE

BRITAIN’S summer was warmer than normal – but also one of the wettest, forecasters said yesterday.

Temperatures between June 1 and August 30 were 0.41C above the average.

Mark McCarthy of the Met Office said: “People may well remember this summer as a bit of a damp squib. Although it has been wetter than average for many, it was also warmer.

“The warm settled periods at the end of June and the beginning of July helped boost the average temperatures.”

It was the 11th wettest summer since records began in 1910.

We had 320mm of rain, 32.8% more than the average of 241mm.

The chilliest place was Scotland with average temperatures of 12.63C.
