Estate’s hunt for treasure

A COUNCIL estate is to be excavated to see if there are ancient tunnels and treasure buried beneath.

Manor estate in Sheffeld stands close to the former castle where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned.

That was demolished in 1649 and it is thought the tunnels were cut off.

Local expert Dr David Clarke said: “One of the earliest mentions of tunnels was in a 1873 letter asking if treasure was buried in the grounds.”
