DOCUMENTARY
WHITE KID, BROWN KID
C4, 10pm Dewsbury in West Yorkshire is one of the most racially segregated towns in the country, with some areas 98% Asian while others are still totally white. And despite the two communities being virtually neighbours, they live completely different and separate lives.
Hoping that the next generation might have some ideas about how to change the situation, this documentary aims to see if two teenage girls – one white, one brown – can become friends.
Siobhan, 16, and Farhana, 17, live less than two miles apart, but on the surface couldn’t be more different. Siobhan likes to go drinking and dancing with her friends – Farhana spends all her time with her family.
But they’ve both agreed to cross the racial divide to take part in this experiment to see if they can build a genuine friendship. However, it’s not just their own prejudices and their family’s opinions they have to deal with – the outside world has thoughts to share too.
