STERLING’S BACK-RASH

- BY JOHN CROSS

ENGLAND boss Gareth Southgate is ready to bring in Marcus Rashford – and that could see Raheem Sterling axed in a backlash after the disappointment in Malta.

Manchester United whizkid Rashford (above) replaced City’s out-of-touch Sterling at half-time in Valletta and is now favourite to start against Slovakia at Wembley.

Southgate will reveal his team to the players today – but Jordan Henderson will stay as captain while Eric Dier is likely to replace Jake Livermore.

Southgate said: “We will make some changes but the core of the team is pretty much established and I don’t think that would surprise too many people, really.

“Eric is obviously an option we have. He’s played in most of the games for us and he’s playing well with his club, so that’s a possible change.

“I think Marcus has been playing very well for Manchester United all season.

“We really like his mentality so we wouldn’t hesitate to start him.

“That was a possibility in Malta but he missed some of the training, not only with us but also the week before with United so we’ve also been looking after him a bit.

“But we would have no hesitation in selecting him.”
