DEFIANT DAVIS A DREAM-WRECKER

- BY DAVID ANDERSON

STEVEN DAVIS stands by his decision to deny Charlton’s Josh Magennis a dream Northern Ireland hat-trick.

Skipper Davis (right) polished off San Marino with a penalty – after Magennis had scored twice.

The Southampton midfielder, 32, jokingly booed by some Northern Ireland fans, defended his decision – insisting he is on spot-kick duties. Davis, a veteran of 96 international caps, said: “I’m the penaltytaker and some people thought I might give it to Josh because he was on a hat-trick, but I wanted to take it. “I wanted to try to get on the scoresheet. If we get any penalties going forward, I’ll be there to take them again. “I put myself forward for them. I got one against San Marino in the home game and it was nice to get one the other night.”
