20 YEARS AGO (1997)
Mother Teresa died of a heart attack aged 87 in Calcutta. The Nobel Peace Prize winner, born in Skopje, Macedonia, in 1910, had devoted her life to helping India’s sick and poor.
31 YEARS AGO (1986)
A 16-hour stand-off on a New York-bound Pan Am jet at Karachi airport ended in carnage after the four Palestinian gunmen panicked fearing an attack by Pakistani commandos and opened fire on the hostages. Some 22 captives were killed and 150 wounded. The hijackers were sentenced to life.
