Our front page reported how survivors of a plane crash in Rhodesia were mown down by insurgents fighting a civil war against the country’s white minority government. Some escaped by hiding in the bush.

20 YEARS AGO (1997)

Mother Teresa died of a heart attack aged 87 in Calcutta. The Nobel Peace Prize winner, born in Skopje, Macedonia, in 1910, had devoted her life to helping India’s sick and poor.

31 YEARS AGO (1986)

A 16-hour stand-off on a New York-bound Pan Am jet at Karachi airport ended in carnage after the four Palestinia­n gunmen panicked fearing an attack by Pakistani commandos and opened fire on the hostages. Some 22 captives were killed and 150 wounded. The hijackers were sentenced to life.
