Heads’ warning over ‘unready’ new schoolkids

The figure is based on data from 7,000 UK schools, which suggests there will be 14,000 job vacancies nationally. Those roles will have to be filled by supply teachers.

Education recruiter Eteach did the number-crunching. Founder Paul Howells said: “Teaching is number of teacher vacancies unfilled at start of school year

failing to attract enough graduates, and schools are struggling to hold on to current teachers, creating a perfect storm of pressures.”

It comes after two thirds of teachers told a recent survey they were looking to leave their current role in the next two years. The main reason was excessive workload.

The Department for Education said: “We are investing £1.3billion up to 2020 to attract new teachers.” INCREASING numbers of children start primary school unable to use the toilet on their own, put on outdoor clothes or even express themselves, head teachers warn.

One in four heads believe more than half of children starting school are not ready to take part in lessons. Many believe “school readiness” is worse than in 2012.

The National Associatio­n of Head Teacher said the poll showed extra cash was needed for early years education and family support.

Paul Whiteman, NAHT chief, said: “Without proper investment, the youngest and most vulnerable in society will start off behind.”
