Spoiling his big day in one night

-

WAYNE Rooney, I hope you look at this picture of little Klay and feel shamed to your core.

It’s his first day at school. He’s all done out in his stiff new shirt and heavy, big boy shoes.

His whole life stretches out before him.

Yet all anyone can think about is what a total prat his dad is. How the father he adores has publicly betrayed and humiliated the mum he loves.

And how Wayne has risked destroying this little boy’s entire happiness, family, home and security for a quick roll around with an opportunistic tart with giant boobs and scant scruples. I’m guessing Wayne wasn’t thinking about little Klay’s baby-tooth grin when he drove off into the night with “letting agent” Laura Simpson. (A woman we can be certain is fairly free with her lettings). Now I hope he thinks of little else than Klay, his brothers Kai and Kit, and the baby who is on the way. Because the way things are going, pictures of his kids might be the closest he gets to them apart from a Sunday afternoon trip to McDonald’s with all the other weekend dads. And actually, that’s all he deserves. I don’t doubt he loves his kids. I don’t doubt he loves Coleen. But there comes a point where love isn’t anywhere near enough. Sustaining a relationship also involves showing respect, self-restraint and not being a flipping idiot every time you’re faced with temptation. There is no doubt Wayne is stupid. But at what point does stupidity become recklessness? After all the occasions he’s veered off the rails in the past, isn’t Wayne now guilty of being wilfully reckless? He knows all too well doing something like he did on Thursday night could destroy everything. But he still did it.

So if is he incurably stupid, is the only solution for Coleen to walk away?

The hard-faced cynics say she’ll never do it as she’d lose her WAG lifestyle.

The tough-talkers say she has to if she’s to retain self-respect. If she doesn’t leave, they carp, isn’t she giving him free rein to do whatever he wants over and over again? All of which sounds to me like a knee-jerk response to betrayal from people who haven’t a clue what they’re talking about.

Coleen’s decision about what happens next will be guided by just one thing – what’s best for the little boy in the picture. And his brothers.

And if she believes keeping them at home with the dad they adore is for the best, that is what she’ll do.

Wayne didn’t give one nanosecond’s thought to those kids when he hooked up with that old trollop.

Right now Coleen won’t be thinking about anything other than them.

And that is the difference between them.

Whether this is a difference that can be overcome remains to be seen.

I just hope Coleen works out what’s best for her kids (and that her revenge, when it comes, is brutal).
