Protection sought for special fare
BRUSSELS is demanding new UK laws to protect 3,300 special status food and drink products.
Negotiators want to ensure region-specific items like burgundy, feta cheese, parmesan and Parma ham are safe from British copycats.
A leaked EU paper said we should put in place the “necessary domestic legislation” to continue their protected status.
The EC drafted product lists in 1992. The UK’s includes Cornish clotted cream and Jersey Royal potatoes.
