Madeleine hunt police ask to ‘pursue final line of inquiry’

- BY TRACEY KANDOHLA and TOM PETTIFOR

KATE and Gerry McCann have fresh hope in the hunt for daughter Madeleine after police asked for new funding.

The Met Police’s application for an undisclosed fee from the Home Office is expected to be approved.

The couple feared the inquiry into the little girl’s disappearance, called Operation Grange, could be shelved in three weeks.

But Clarence Mitchell, the McCann family spokesman, said: “Kate and Gerry are extremely thankful to the Met Police for requesting extra funding. “They are very encouraged there remains work to be done.” Scotland Yard asked for the cash from the Special Grants Committee to “pursue a final line of inquiry”. Madeleine, three, vanished from a holiday flat in Portugal’s Praia da Luz in May 2007. Operation Grange has cost UK taxpayers £11.2million.
