True Brit hero who quit the Army to fight ISIS

Ex-soldier on his need to go to Syria

A FORMER British Army soldier who is fighting Islamic State in Syria has told of the daily dangers he faces on the front line.

Kevin Benton, 25, lied to his parents and said he was volunteeri­ng overseas as a medic, when he was instead going to join the Syrian Democratic Forces.

Over the past six months he has been in besieged city Raqqa, where his “clearance unit” deactivate­s improvised bombs and kills jihadi snipers.

But despite the risks as his team creeps into ISIS territory each night, Kevin said: “I came to Syria because it was my way to help. After the spate of attacks in Europe I felt I had to come.”

Describing one recent, perilous mission, he went on: “We were ambushed twice in one night in the same area. ISIS fighters were in higher buildings and had the vantage point.

“They were so close to us, it was terrifying. It was a cat that saved us. It ran out from a doorway and my eye was drawn to the movement.

“That night six ISIS fighters died and one was wounded. I was hit under the arm by the enemy when we were peeling back. I’ve also been hit in the
