Drug dealers target OAPs as garden plant smells of dope

- BY MARTIN FRICKER

AN elderly couple have been targeted by drug dealers because a plant in their garden smells like cannabis.

The pair were horrified when masked men knocked on the front door of their home and demanded they “hand over the stash”.

Days later, their house in Winford, Bristol, was burgled by crooks hunting for the non-existent drugs.

Police also noticed the cannabis smell but could not locate the source. They called in horticulturist Alan Down who identified an Iranian Caucasian Crosswort as the culprit. He said: “The couple had this plant and been visited by criminals asking for the cannabis they could smell. Apparently this is common – word gets out that someone is growing cannabis and a gang go and take it.” Officers have stepped up patrols near the couple’s home.
