The true test of courage is not to react violently, but to stand up to them without worsening the situation.

# The BBC must think again about the huge salaries paid to stars, such as Chris Evans on £2.2million a year. The TV licence subsidises these wages which none of them deserve.

I work 10 hours a day for £20,000 a year. If they feel hard done by I suggest they leave. I’m sure others could do the job just as well. The best presenters, such as Robin Day, have all gone. Will Rogers Aldershot, Hants

# Patrick McHale hailed Wayne Rooney’s “almost spotless track record serving club and country” (Madeuthink, Sept 7). Does that include about half a dozen reds, two of which came representi­ng his country? Not quite Gary Lineker, is he?
