WESTLEY HOPES GO SOUTH

- BY DEAN WILSON

TOM WESTLEY’S hopes of an Ashes adventure receded ever further away after another failure to hit a straight ball.

And, to make matters worse, he had to have a discussion with his captain over whether or not he could be reprieved by the review system – and Joe Root told him to hop it.

Trapped lbw for just eight by Jason Holder, Westley (right) had faced 30 balls and had battled so hard to still be out there when the dreaded finger was raised.

There was a chance he might have been just outside the line, but Root made the right call in refusing the review because it would have been umpire’s call and he would have walked anyway.

The fact that Mark Stoneman also fell cheaply probably does not help Westley any more because of the opener’s 50 at Leeds that, in all likelihood, booked him a flight to Perth.

But, for England’s No.3, he would appear to be down to his very last chance in the second innings, in what look like being more favourable bowling conditions.

There is no hiding place for the Essex batsman who has tightened up more and more with each game played.

His time is almost up.
