Hard to bear.. UK’s panda is not pregnant

- BY STEPHEN WHITE

BRITAIN’S only female giant panda is not pregnant after all, it was revealed yesterday.

Experts at Edinburgh Zoo announced last month that Tian Tian was believed to be expecting.

But tests have now found that her hormone levels and behaviour have returned to normal.

It is the sixth failed artificial insemination attempt since Tian Tian (Sweetie in Chinese) and male Yang Guang (Sunshine) arrived in 2011.

Iain Valentine, director of the zoo’s Giant Panda Project, said: “It is with sadness that we can confirm Tian Tian will not give birth to cubs this year.”

The pair, who are on loan from China for a decade, are the only giant pandas living in the UK.
