CCTV footage shows the lad, thought to be five, slip behind the counter while the man distracts a staff member.

The boy takes the shop assistant’s Samsung Galaxy S7 and then tries to get into the till while the man continues to fake interest in an item.

No arrests have been made and the footage from the Candle Shop at The Glades shopping centre in Bromley, South-East London, was released in the hope of catching the man. Constable Ben Briselden, of the Met Police, said: “We are keen to identify the man in the CCTV footage who appears to use the child in their care to steal.”
