W1A plots Great British Bike Off

-

MOCKUMENTARY series W1A will bow out with a series of gags about the Great British Bake Off and a cross-dressing footballer on Match Of The Day.

The comedy’s third series sees BBC execs brainstorming for Bake Off replacements which include BBC Bun Time, where celebrities create a bun.

There is another plan to film members of the public on bicycles and call the show The Great British Bike Off. So ridiculous it may well come true.

There is also a story about cross-dressing former Premier League footballer Ryan Chelford, played by Ben Batt, who claims he was dropped as a pundit from Match Of The Day because of his private life.

In fact, he was auditioned and it turned out he was not very good.

Thankfully, unlike Ryan, this series looks like it will score with viewers so it can go out on a high. Creator John Morton said it took a year to write, adding: “This is probably going to be its final series. I have written it to a conclusion.

“There is no plane crash, but with that in mind, I thought if this is the final series it had better be good for all our sakes.

“So it was a big pressure. It would be nice to go out at the top.” Hugh Bonneville who plays Head of BBC Values Ian Fletcher, spoke in the style of his character – trying to think outside the box – when asked about the series.

He said: “I think to say that life is getting easier would be an overstatement, but often within overstatements are kernels of truth and frequently at the nub of a kernel can be found the essence of possibility.

“Options are there to be explored for Ian, some more positive than others, but ultimately he has a sense of loyalty to those on the bridge with him.” W1A returns on Monday at 10pm on BBC Two.
