HE expected to be getting ready for the Champions League with Liverpool or Chelsea this week. Instead, Virgil van Dijk last night played his first game of the season – a 4-0 defeat for Southampton Under-23s at Banks’s Stadium in Walsall.

The £60million-rated Holland defender had tried to force a move away from of St Mary’s during the transfer window but Saints dug in their heels.

Van Dijk started training again last week and played the full 90 minutes (right) for Southampton’s second string against Aston Villa.
