Bet machine limit to be cut
MINISTERS are poised to slash the maximum stake on fixed odds betting terminals after the Treasury dropped its objections.
Chancellor Philip Hammond reportedly tried to block curbs, fearing the loss of hundreds of millions of pounds in tax, but now accepts they are needed.
Punters can now bet £100 a time on the machines, known as the crack cocaine of gambling, but stakes could be cut to £2 in a review next month.
Labour’s Tom Watson called the terminals “a blight on our high streets”.
