He wages cold war on nemesis

GEORGE Osborne has declared he “will not rest” until Theresa May is “chopped up in bags in my freezer”, it is claimed.

A staffer at the Evening Standard, where the former Chancellor is now editor, reportedly told how Mr Osborne had repeated the grisly remark to “more than one person”.

The revelation came in an Esquire magazine profile of Mr Osborne, which accused him of using the pages of his newspaper to get revenge on the Prime Minister, who sacked him from the Cabinet last year.

It also quoted a former aide saying he “doesn’t want people to think he’s an a***hole, because he’s not an a***hole”. And it claimed he had sent a memo to his newspaper’s opinion writers telling them not to go “OTT” on the Grenfell Tower disaster.

He said it was “sloppy journalism” to blame the fire on cost-cutting by a Tory council and government.

Mr Osborne reportedly said: “The failure was a massive failure of fire standards over many, many years. That is a scandal we’ve talked about.”

The profile highlighted how the former top Tory used his editorship to attack Mrs May’s leadership.

He has repeatedly criticised Mrs May, accusing her of being a “dead woman walking” after her election results. One leader in the Standard said: “Like the living dead in a secondrate horror film, the premiership of Theresa May staggers on oblivious.”

Mrs May’s former joint chief of staff Nick Timothy hit back at Mr Osborne and said: “Not sure why he worries people think he’s an a***hole.”

Tory MP Nadine Dorries said the remarks on Mrs May were “a brief insight into how his mind works”.

The PM’s spokesman responded, saying: “The contents of the former Chancellor’s freezer are probably not a matter for me.” But one Osborne ally said: “He’s got a gun now.

“One thing people in the Conservative Party will realise is, ‘You mess with George Osborne at your peril’.”
