Clinic pays £27m to victims of breast cancer ‘butcher’
A PRIVATE clinic will pay £27.2million to hundreds of patients of a “butcher” rogue breast cancer surgeon.
Ian Paterson, 59, carried out “needless” procedures including mastectomies and is serving 20 years in jail.
At the time he had practices at two Spire Healthcare hospitals as well as working for the NHS.
The NHS has paid out £17.4million after settling cases of more than 270 patients who sued over botched or unnecessary surgery. Now Spire has agreed compensation to 750 patients. It could bring payouts for his private patients to nearly £50,000. Paterson, of Lower Peover, Cheshire, was suspended by the General Medical Council in 2012 but a loophole meant he could still work in the private sector. Spire boss Simon Gordon said the crimes “should not have happened” in the clinics.
