Johnson: We are here to help victims of Irma ‘hell’

AID Johnson in Anguilla BORIS Johnson praised the response of Britons in the Caribbean after arriving to see the “hellish” destructio­n caused by Hurricane Irma.

The Foreign Secretary toured the devastated island of Anguilla as the UK pledged a further £25million towards relief. It takes the total to £32million to help rescue efforts.

Mr Johnson told storm survivors: “We are here to help.” He is also set to visit the British Virgin Islands.

His arrival came as former England footballer Emile Heskey, 39, revealed he fears his family on Barbuda has been “wiped out” by Irma.

The exLiverpoo­l FEAR Heskey striker’s parents escaped in Antigua, but relatives have not been in contact. He told the BBC: “My mum can’t get hold of them.”

The death toll rose to 60 after six residents of a Florida nursing home died after being left without electricit­y. Ten million people are still without power in Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas.

In the UK, a Red Cross appeal raised £1.3million, with the £650,000 donated by the public matched by the Government.

In America, celebritie­s including Justin Bieber, George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Leonardo DiCaprio took telephone donations and put on performanc­es for charity.
