1868: The 17-year-old Tom Morris registered the first hole-in-one in the Open, the 166-yard eighth hole at Prestwick. Tom beat his father, Old Tom, by three strokes to become the youngest winner of the championsh­ip.

1905: The Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT), the oldest surviving motorcar race in the world, was first contested.

1963: George Best made his debut for Manchester United at the age of 17 in a 1-0 victory over West Brom at Old Trafford.

2015: Former Yorkshire and England captain Brian Close died aged 84.

2016: Leicester City won their first ever Champions League game 3-0 against Club Brugge, with Riyad Mahrez scoring twice after Marc Albrighton’s opener.
