WE’RE PLEASED TO MEET ROO..

- BY SIMON BIRD

ATALANTA coach Gian Piero Gasperini is rubbing his hands at the prospect of seeing Wayne Rooney.

The Italians are delighted that the Everton star is set to play, describing their Euro adventure as a “novelty” after a 26-year absence.

Gasperini said: “Rooney is an important part of English football and I would be glad if he plays because it would be prestigious to face a great opponent.“

Atalanta lost their first two games of the Serie A campaign, but won at the weekend.

Gasperini said: “Everton are a strong team, but the others in the group – Lyon and Apollon Limassol – are not far behind.

“When you meet teams from the Premier League it is always hard, a big tough game. These two teams have never met before and we don’t know them.

“This is a novelty so we must learn to adapt.”
