Joker Johnson upstages PM again
THERESA May’s talks with Canadian PM Justin Trudeau yesterday were overshadowed by Boris Johnson hinting he might quit.
On her way to Ottawa, Mrs May tried to shrug off Johnson’s revival of the £350-million-aweek Brexit bonus lie, sighing: “Look, Boris is Boris. What is important is the position of the Government – and it’s the position of the Government I’ll set out on Friday.”
She was referring to her speech in Florence which is expected to clarify her Brexit position.
But Johnson – who met President Trump at the United Nations in New York – dropped a huge hint he could resign as Foreign Secretary.
In the wake of his 4,000-word Brexit essay, which is upstaging Mrs May, he told reporters: “When the burden of office is lifted from my shoulders I will of course look back with great pride on my time doing all sorts of things.”
As Mrs May flew to Canada, she suffered another blow as it was revealed Olly Robbins was standing down as permanent secretary at the Department for Exiting the EU.
It is understood he will now work for the PM.
THERESA and Boris mean we’re lumbered with a dangerously weak, warring and incompetent Government when Brexit’s crying out for strong leadership.
When Tories scrapping for the keys to Downing Street are shamefully more interested in their own jobs than the jobs of British workers, they’ll never be taken seriously by European Union negotiators.
The Conservative circus isn’t funny when so much is at stake and May is so feeble she can’t even sack her rebellious serial liar. She is becoming an international laughing stock.
Johnson’s treachery damaged both himself and her, but the highest price will be paid by an electorate betrayed by the Tory civil war.
