COTTERILL SET TO FORGIVE BLUES ‘BETRAYAL’

- BY JAMES NURSEY

STEVE COTTERILL is willing to return to Birmingham just five months after feeling Harry Redknapp betrayed him.

Former Burnley, Nottingham Forest and Bristol City boss Cotterill joined Blues last April as coach under Redknapp.

The duo, alongside fellow first team coach Paul Groves, kept Blues up with two wins from their final three Championship games.

Cotterill, 53, was under the impression he would get the permanent manager’s job this summer with Redknapp, 70, moving upstairs.

Mirror Sport understands that Cotterill was dismayed when Redknapp signed a £1.7million one-year deal to stay on as boss for this term. Cotterill declined to stay on the St Andrew’s coaching staff, but is keen to return now Redknapp has been axed.

Cotterill feels he did not get the credit he deserved for his work drilling Blues on the training ground last term.

And he appears to have been sorely missed this season as Birmingham have managed just one league win from eight games despite 14 new signings.

That form saw Redknapp sacked after Saturday’s 3-1 home loss to Preston, which left City 23rd in the Championship.

Former Birmingham midfielder Lee Carsley has been placed in temporary charge after stepping up from the club’s development squad.
