Trash test for drivers
Roadside funnel bins for motorists
DRIVE-BY funnel bins are being placed at roadsides so motorists can chuck their rubbish on the move.
The containers with mouths a footand-a-half wide are being unveiled next week to stop drivers clogging verges and hedgerows with wrappers and bottles.
But campaigners slammed them as a cheap gimmick, saying they give the green light to litter louts.
Clean Up Britain founder John Read said: “We’re trying to stop people throwing things from car windows and this encourages them to do just that.
“Highways England has a duty to ensure motorways are kept clean. Instead they’ve come up with a low-cost option that’s like putting a plaster on a gaping wound. These bins won’t do the job.”
Highways England said the bins at service stations in the North West will “make it easier for drivers to dispose of litter responsibly.” Road littering, which costs £6million a year to tidy, fell 25% in a funnel bin trial on the M3 in Hampshire.
