CYCLISTS who kill pedestrians could be jailed for up to 14 years.

Transport Minister Jesse Norman last night announced an urgent review into creating a new offence equivalent to causing death by careless or dangerous driving.

The inquiry follows the death of mum Kim Briggs, 44, mown down last year by cyclist Charlie Alliston in London. Alliston, then 18, was found guilty of causing harm by “wanton and furious driving”, a crime under the 1861 Offences Against the Person Act, designed for horse carriages.

On Monday Alliston was given 18 months prison against a maximum sentence of two years.

Death by dangerous driving has a top jail term of 14 years.
