ELDERLY WOMAN STUNG BY CONMEN DEMANDING PIN

-

WANTED Courier criminals Here’s another hugely depressing case of crooks posing as police officers to fleece a vulnerable victim.

A caller claiming to be “DCI Alex Watts” from Wood Green police station in London told the victim that her bank card had been cloned and two suspects had been arrested.

In order to help the investigation, she was told to reveal her PIN and give her card to a courier who would be sent to collect it. The caller also asked the woman, who is in her 80s, about cash she kept in the house.

She was told to read out the serial numbers, and was informed that the notes were counterfeit and should also be given to the courier.

She later became suspicious and contacted Wood Green police station, and was told that there was no DCI Alex Watts. “Police officers will never phone you up and ask you to disclose information such as bank card details and PINs or arrange couriers to come and pick up items,” said Detective Constable Becky Smith.

The Met has released CCTV of two men it would like to trace after the bank card was used to withdraw money in Belsize Park, North London.

Officers are not revealing how much money the victim lost.
