People who decide to defer taking their state pension are being urged to apply for the Winter Fuel Payment.

Large numbers are being forced to work longer because the rising cost of living and insufficient private pension savings means they can’t afford to retire.

Poverty charity Turn2us says every winter it is contacted by older people who are eligible for, but not receiving, the Winter Fuel Payment of between £100 and £300.

Those born on or before August 5, 1953 are entitled to this payment, which they usually receive automatically, but only if they are receiving their state pension or another social security benefit.

Simon Hopkins, of Turn2us, said: “Too many are forced to make the difficult choice between heating and eating.” Call 03459 151515.
