Tourists ignore terror threat and cash in on Brexit pound
A RECORD-breaking 23 million tourists have flocked to Britain already this year.
Four million visitors in July alone put aside fears of terrorism and made the most of a weak Brexit pound, spending £2.8billion.
The strong dollar against sterling attracted a record 650,000 US holidaymakers in that month, up 9% on 2016, Office for National Statistics figures show. The number of overseas visitors between January and July was 23.1 million, up 8% on last year. And total spending has risen 9% to £13.3billion. The data reveals tourists boost the UK economy by around £127billion each year. VisitBritain director Patricia Yates said: “This sustained growth shows that tourism is an increasingly important driver of economic growth.”
