Drink-driver in fatal ‘kiss crash’ jailed
A DRINK-driver who claimed he killed his girlfriend in a smash after she distracted him with a kiss was jailed for two years.
Benjamin Hughes, 24, downed pints and shots before driving off with Dominique Wright, 23.
He hit a tree after losing control and Ms Wright, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died instantly.
Nottingham crown court heard he had 141mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood, against a limit of 80.
Hughes, of Lowdham, Notts, admitted guilt. He also got a four-year ban.
Judge John Burgess said: “Something happened to distract you. You spoke of a kiss to police. I know you never intended harm. But the courts need to remind the public of the consequences of drink-driving.”
