KUMAR GIVES OUT SOM STICK

- BY DEAN WILSON

SOMERSET need a miracle to remain in Division One after Surrey’s Kumar Sangakkara got the perfect Oval goodbye.

The Sri Lankan, 39, will be missed in south London where he helped Surrey to a six wicket win with his eighth ton of the season (left). He made 35 in the second innings run chase as Surrey hit their target of 143 with Ben Foakes guiding them home on the final afternoon with 42 not out.

Somerset are now 13 points adrift of Hampshire and need to handsomely win their final game against Middlesex with other results going their way.

Yorkshire’s two-wicket win over Warwickshire helped ease their own drop fears, but with Somerset losing they should be fine. Worcestershire and Nottinghamshire have long been the two teams expected to swap places with relegated Warwickshire and Co, but Northants are still in the running after Rory Kleinveldt’s 13-98 in the match against Notts. There is hope for the T20 kings who play bottom club Leicestershire next week, while Notts must beat Sussex.
