HERE’S a statistic that should leave us feeling flushed with embarrassment…

Brits spend twice as long sitting on the toilet as they do exercising, a poll claims.

Adults clock up an average of three hours, nine minutes using the loo each week but just 90 minutes being active.

The UKactive poll found more than a quarter of people exercise for 30 minutes or less each week and almost two-thirds sit down for at least six hours a day. Chief executive Steven Ward said: “Modern living has stripped physical activity out of our lives to the point where we pass more time spending a penny than we do getting sweaty.” The NHS recommends 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise to stay healthy. Idleness kills 37,000 people a year, UKactive revealed. NHS expert Professor Sir Muir Gray said: “Physical inactivity is society’s silent killer, even short bouts of being sedentary can lead to deadly diseases.”
