We reported that 38 IRA inmates had broken out of the maximum security Maze prison in Northern Ireland. They stabbed a prison warden to death before escaping in a hi-jacked lorry. Days later 19 were recaptured.

Democrat John F Kennedy and Republican Richard Nixon clashed in the first ever televised debate between US presidenti­al candidates.

44 YEARS AGO (1973)

Concorde made its first non-stop flight across the Atlantic in a record three hours, 32 minutes. The supersonic jet averaged 954mph on the flight from Washington to Orly airport in Paris.
