Workers’ rights victory for cab drivers
THOUSANDS of minicab drivers will be entitled to the national minimum wage and holiday pay after a landmark legal ruling yesterday.
The GMB union said the decision against taxi firm Addison Lee was a victory for workers’ rights over bogus self-employment in the so-called “gig economy”.
Three drivers employed by the firm in London fought to be classed as workers rather than self-employed.
Their claims, supported by the GMB, were upheld in a ruling by the London Central Employment Tribunal that follows a similar victory against Uber last year.
The GMB’s Maria Ludkin said: “Addison Lee drivers are workers and are entitled to workers’ rights.”
The company said it was “disappointed” by the ruling.
