Real leaders by example

THE revelation by top Jeremy Corbyn aide Karie Murphy that she donated a kidney to a complete stranger is humbling.

Her selfless act makes the Labour leader’s backing for the Daily Mirror’s Change the Law for Life campaign all the more poignant.

It is hard to see how Karie’s willingness to give life to somebody she did not know – a young lad in the North East of England – could better embody her belief in values of public service, community, fraternity and solidarity.

Corbyn’s support for a new organ donor law in England, to bring it into line with Wales and soon Scotland, is hugely welcome and speaks volumes for his decency in the face of the needless deaths of hundreds waiting in vain for transplants, which is a national scandal.

Together we can make a difference. The loss of organs and lives, simply because people never get round to signing the donor register, is an unforgivable and avoidable tragedy.

A better future is possible.
